One of Charlotte’s oldest Black-led nonprofits will close its doors on June 20, effectively shifting key functions to another Black-led group.

Tameka Gunn, president and CEO of Community Link, said the decision to close the 96-year-old organization came after much consideration. Community Link, she said, could no longer raise the “unrestricted dollars” it needed to support its administrative operations.

“It was a very difficult decision,” she said of the closing. “It was not made likely.”

In recent decades, Community Link, founded in 1929 as a travelers aid society, has focused on helping low- and moderate-income clients build wealth through home ownership. It also offers a free service to help those clients prepare and understand their annual tax filings.
