Even after some firms faced sanctions and fines in recent years, some industry experts foresee attorneys nationwide continuing to use artificial intelligence tools that produce incorrect information for their court filings because they lack knowledge about the technology.

One such occurrence in Alabama in recent weeks led to a federal court judge threatening sanctions against an attorney at an Am Law Second Hundred firm that used ChatGPT for research and included AI-produced citations to cases that didn’t exist in two motions defending the state’s corrections commissioner.
