Plans of a sent shockwaves through Kelso, Washington on Thursday.
After the FBI announced the suspect was a teenager, the case became even more surprising to many.
"It's not something you'd think would happen in Kelso. It's scary," Sandy Gaskill, a lifetime resident of Kelso told KATU. "It scares the heck out of me. I can't believe it's gotten to this point."
Gaskill said she is now second guessing visiting the mall.
"I never felt it was that unsafe as far as just going to the mall, but now it does worry me," she said.
"I just never thought that would have happened over here, because especially because everyone knows each other, and it's just such a small town," Kelso High School student Lilly Hostetter said.
