LANSING — For years, the Almont girls soccer team had been knocking on the door .

On Thursday, it busted right through.

The Raiders overcame an early deficit and outlasted Frankenmuth, 2-1, to win their first-ever regional championship.

Callie McCarthy and Lola Battaglia both scored goals for Almont, which improved to 17-4-2 overall and advanced to Tuesday's Division 3 state semifinal against Warren Regina.

Trailing 1-0 for much of the first half, the Raiders evened the score on a goal from McCarthy six minutes before the break.

Battaglia's strike came midway through the second half on a corner kick.

Tuesday's semifinal against Regina is at Parker Middle School in Howell. Game time is 6 p.m.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
