“Remember, man, that thou are dust, and into dust thou shalt return.” Catholic priests say that as they inscribe the sign of the cross in ashes on the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday. As I’ve confided before, I’m a lapsed Catholic, to say the least, but I always took that liturgical memento mori to heart. And as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that we would all do well to be reminded of our mortality every now and then.
