RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Fast slides, splashing waters and just all around fun — It's what families are finding at Raleigh's Gipson Play Plaza at Dix Park.

The play plaza is the largest adventure playground in the southeast. The 18.5-acre park marks the first major project as the city works to overhaul Dorothea Dix Park.

This area was once a flat, grassy space and now features a sandy play area, water features, climbing towers and swings. There are even spaces for families to sit and relax under the shade. It once served as a recreation field for patients of the former mental health hospital. Today, it gets a new beginning.
