Your recent article regarding the Capital Area Greenbelt Association’s efforts to develop an alternative route through South Harrisburg is disturbing.
As a non-profit organization staffed entirely by volunteers, it will take a major effort for them to gain access to the private property the new trail would cross. And it will be a Herculean effort to raise the $3 million needed to establish a new route.
Further, because it will traverse Sycamore Street, it will be nowhere near as safe as the previous route, putting cyclists and walkers at risk.
Unless private funding can be found, it is likely the organization will be looking for grants from local, state, and federal governments for the majority of the funds needed ... money we can only characterize as tax dollars.
