WESTBROOK, Maine — When the pile of broken microscopes at Westbrook Middle School started stacking up, one eighth-grader started working to bring them back to life.
Jack Wescott doesn't have much free time after finishing his schoolwork, but when he does, he reaches for a screwdriver.
With a few tools and some guidance from YouTube tutorials, Jack has repaired more than 30 microscopes for his school.
"I'll type in like, 'how to fix,' the brand of the microscope, and, 'what’s wrong with it,'" he said.
Principal Laurie Wood said Jack's work has been a game-changer.
"Jack is the kind of kid that, we have so many kids like him, who need to learn by doing and by investigating and doing something with their hands," Wood said.
Oftentimes, broken microscopes just get set aside by teachers,
