TOWN OF DENMARK, N.Y. (WWTI) - A skunk that has tested positive for rabies was found according to the Lewis County Public Health Department.
According to public health officials, the New York State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory that a skunk in the Town of Denmark has tested positive for rabies.
However, there was no contact with humans or domestic animals.
In May, a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Martinsburg.
Lewis County’s health department reminds all Lewis County residents and those that visit the county that rabies is a very serious and deadly disease affecting the central nervous system.
Rabies can be transmitted from infected animals to humans if they are exposed to the saliva or nervous tissue of a rabid animal through a bite or scratch.
