After a long, cold winter and chilly spring, hundreds of area students ditched class and headed south for Beach Day on Friday.

Lakeside towns in Norfolk County were packed with teens relaxing on the sand, listening to music and even taking a dip in Lake Erie.

“The second I heard ‘Beach Day’, I made plans immediately,” Kalen Johnson of Paris said while spending time in Turkey Point.

A Grade 12 student, Johnson added that his parents were OK with him taking a day off.

“It’s a tradition,” he said. “If my parents had a problem with it, they just wouldn’t know.”

Johnson was one of a handful of beachgoers who enjoyed some friendly competition. He and his peers set up a volleyball court in hopes of playing most of the day.
