SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — Dozens of animals were seized from a property in Surprise in what investigators describe as deplorable conditions.

Contractors working on a home near 167th Avenue and Dove Valley Road called authorities earlier this week to report what appeared to be a large number of neglected animals.

On Thursday morning, Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant on the property. According to MCSO, detectives found the animals were not getting enough water and were “clearly suffering.”

Deputies seized 38 chickens, six ducks, nine cats and one horse. The animals were taken to MCSO’s Animal Safe Haven (MASH) Unit and are being treated for malnutrition and injuries.
