SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man who was found guilty of transporting more than 700,000 fentanyl pills with the intent to sell them was sentenced Thursday to 10 years behind bars in state prison, California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office said in a release.
Jose Hector Ruiz was arrested in February 2024 in Alpine as part of a joint investigation by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations' Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team, U.S. Border Patrol, and state and local law enforcement.
According to Bonta, a total of 110 packages containing pills with "M30" markings that were later determined to be fentanyl were pulled from his vehicle at the time. Law enforcement estimated that about 720,000 pills were in the packages, weighing a total of 158.5 pounds.
