PHOENIX — The father of a 5-year-old girl fatally shot by her 9-year-old brother in Phoenix allegedly admitted to police he was not legally allowed to own a firearm and had purchased an AR-style rifle through a "private sale," records show.
On the night of June 3, Layla Ramos sustained a fatal gunshot wound at a residence in south Phoenix. She was rushed to the hospital and later died.
Phoenix police said the 5-year-old was accidentally shot by her older brother.
Irvin Ramos-Jimenez, the children's father, was taken into custody for an alleged weapons offense.
Court records reveal the father allegedly admitted to storing a rifle in his son's bedroom.
