Southern Arizona's fire season continues to be hectic as a new wildfire broke out Wednesday morning near the U.S.-Mexico border, consuming nearly 2,750 acres about 20 miles south of Patagonia, Ariz.
Around 11:40 a.m., officials with Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said on social media the Ranch Fire had consumed at least 30 acres of grass and brush. However, officials updated their estimate to 889 acres a few hours later, and said early Wednesday evening that the fire had been mapped by air at about 2,751 acres.
The blaze, just north of the hamlet of Lochiel on the Mexican border, was sparked by a lightning strike, forestry officials said.
Officials added the fire's behavior had "moderated slightly" but added its left flank was "still fairly active."
