A garbage truck wedged between two Interstate 10 ramps in New Orleans for weeks was being removed by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development on Friday afternoon.

The vehicle, now decorated with graffiti, was over height due to the added dumpster when it got stuck on ramp May 19. It also hit an overhead girder and crashed into a steel support column, causing structural damage to the Airline Drive ramp above it.

The garbage tipped over on its side upon impact and has been stuck since.

DOTD crews were able to use tools to remove the truck bed from the dumpster and get both parts upright by 1:15 p.m. Friday. The dumpster's top was hauled away by a crane.

Machinery and tow trucks were on hand to begin the removal process, which is ahead of schedule.
