DALLAS — The New York Knicks plan to ask the Dallas Mavericks for permission to speak to head coach Jason Kidd about their head coaching job that became available after the Knicks fired their head coach Tom Thibodeau , DLLS Mavs insider Marc Stein reported.

Thibodeau's firing came after he led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Associated Press reported .

The Mavs inked a two-year contract extension with Kidd in May of last year during the Mavs' playoff run that ended with a trip to the NBA Finals, Stein reported.
