Strong-mayor powers weren’t used by Welland Mayor Frank Campion in his request for the federal government to deliver its former post office building to the city.
In a recent letter to Government Transformation, Public Services and Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound, Campion said the building at 34-38 King St. , between Division and East Main streets, has been broken into numerous times and is frequented by squatters.
According to The Historical Marker Database , the three-storey building, on what then was the east bank of the operating Welland Canal, was constructed from 1901-02; the top floor space was an apartment for a custodian. It also served as a customs house.
The old post office was replaced by a new building around the corner on Division Street in the mid-1950s.
