Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared two Hamilton police officers who shot Erixon Kabera , after an investigation found the 43-year-old walked toward the officers armed with a replica gun.

“The officers honestly believed they were looking at an actual gun in the complainant’s possession,” Special Investigations Unit director Joseph Martino wrote in the report released Friday. “Though mistaken, their misapprehension was a reasonable one.”

Kabera, a father of three who was active in the local Rwandan community, died in hospital early on Nov. 10, 2024 — not long after he was shot in the fifth-floor hallway of his condo building at 1964 Main St. W.
