RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) -The first African American woman to serve as Richmond Public School’s superintendent has died.

A Virginia Union University distinguished alumna, pioneering educator, and transformative leader whose impact spanned generations, Brown’s lifelong commitment to education and equity made her a towering figure in Virginia’s history.

She began her 41-year-long teaching career in Fairfax, Virginia, and later worked as a biology teacher at Armstrong High School in Richmond.

In 1974, she became the principal of Armstrong High School, then moved on to become RPS’s assistant superintendent for secondary education in 1985 and assistant superintendent for instruction in 1989.
