MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on Friday issued a public apology to the Zellars family following backlash over recent media coverage of a new music studio program inside the detention center.

Video surfaced this week showing an inmate of the detention center, who is currently accused in the death of the Zellars’ son, participating in the new music program.

This specific interview did not air on Queen City News/WJZY.

The Zellars family was not informed in advance that the accused would be featured, the sheriff’s office shared. In a statement released on Friday, MCSO acknowledged the emotional impact the coverage had on the Zellars and admitted that greater sensitivity should have been shown.
