The University of Minnesota is proposing a 7% cut to its academic programming and a massive hike in tuition fees in the face of a "stark" and "uncertain" financial future.

The university intends to increase tuition fees by 6.5% for in-state and out-of-state undergraduates and in-state graduates, and by 7.5% for out-of-state graduates.

That would see tuition fees for in-state undergrads rise to more than $16,100 starting this fall. Per the Star Tribune, it would be the largest tuition increase in 14 years.

It would be complemented by a series of budget cuts to reflect the current financial reality facing higher education, which includes a 7% "programmatic scope reduction" in 2025-26, as well as the closure of the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis and the sale of land on which it sit
