MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Two days after a man was shot and killed by police in Martin County and the district attorney says he will not release the man’s name.

District Attorney Tom Anglim said this afternoon the name of the man killed is “protected” by state law.

The state’s open records law says a “complaining witness”, which is defined as a victim, is public record.

Neighbors say Don Matthews was shot at his home on North Front Street, this after an hours-long armed standoff.

It began when deputies learned of an intoxicated armed man riding around Hamilton in a white pickup truck. According to radio calls obtained by WITN, the pickup truck in question was registered to Donald Matthews IV.
