DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -- Funding to help reimagine the site of the former Towne Mall has been approved by Governor Mike DeWine.

The governor announced Thursday a grant totaling $2,500,000 will be sent to the Warren County Port Authority to clean up the mall in the 3400 block of Towne Boulevard in Middletown.

With the funds, unsafe structures on the property will be demolished. Materials containing asbestos at the site will be abated, according to DeWine.

"The abatement and demolition will prepare the 32-acre site for commercial and light industrial redevelopment, addressing known environmental hazards and enabling future development opportunities expected to create 500 new jobs," said DeWine.

In July 2024, Middletown purchased the property to oversee the redevelopment of the site.
