AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A meeting on Friday evening is taking place between community members and Augusta city leaders looking to find an end to gun violence.

This is at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater and plaza.

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month, and people wore orange at the event as a representation.

No parent wants to bury their child - Phyllis Jackson certainly wasn’t prepared to bury her only son.

He was shot and killed in Augusta in 2019.

Jackson is now the head of the local Moms Demand Action group - turning her pain into purpose.

“Our children are not statistics, they’re names,” said Phyllis Jackson, mom and gun violence survivor.

For Jackson, that name is Gerald.

“I miss my son’s smile. I miss his laughter. I miss him showing, just showing up,” said Jackson.
