FREMONT, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill on Thursday declaring Oct. 4 as "Rutherford B. Hayes Day" to honor the 19th U.S. president, whose history runs deep in the Buckeye State.

After his presidency from 1887-1881, Hayes settled down with his wife, Lucy Webb Hayes, at his uncle's Fremont estate, Spiegel Grove. About 30 years after the former president died, an effort by one of his sons led to the opening of the Hayes Memorial in 1916 on the 25-acre plot of land.

Now known as the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, the nonprofit has a plethora of historical documents and items personal to Hayes, along with much more available on location in Fremont.
