OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s bid to Trump-proof and supercharge the Canadian economy was unveiled Friday when the Liberal government tabled a bill to give itself new powers to skirt existing laws to fast-track “nation-building” development projects. The law also seeks to ease the flow of goods and workers within the country, as part of Carney’s promise to secure “free trade” by Canada Day.
Declaring the bill is necessary to meet the moment with the “urgency and determination it requires,” Carney said the changes are long overdue. He also promised that his minority government will do “everything” it can to pass the legislation in the coming weeks, even if it must extend the current session of Parliament into the summer break set to start June 20.
