AKWESASNE — While many departments of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) have been working out of the Teionkwarihwaienawà:kon, or community services building, since the fall, people were invited to tour the newly renovated facility during its grand opening on Friday.
Formerly an IGA grocery store, the SRMT acquired the building and property in 2010 and continued to operate it as a grocery store briefly before determining it wasn’t profitable. Sitting closed and vacant for a period of time, the building was only used sporadically for events and initiatives like the Children’s Powwow, governmental tobacco stamping, and COVID-19 vaccination clinics.
