ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The death of Robert Brooks led to a new package of bills that tackles prison reform. The announcement came days after Marcy corrections officers, charged in the killing of Brooks, argued their cases should be dismissed.
The New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus introduced the “Robert Brooks Blueprint for Justice & Reform”. Assemblymember Michaelle Solages is the chair of the caucus.
“When we saw the death of Robert Brooks, we first grieved. But then took our pain and put it into purpose,” said Solages, (D-District 22).
She said their goal is to transform the correctional system. Assemblymember Demond Meeks said between January and May there have been dozens of deaths in NYS prisons.
