A bridge over the Rio Grande in Española is closing Saturday morning and will remain closed indefinitely, state transportation officials announced Friday.

The Oñate Bridge is being closed to both vehicles and pedestrians at 8 a.m. due to the approaching monsoon and will stay closed "as engineers address ongoing concerns about riverbed erosion around one of the bridge’s piers that could pose a risk during periods of high river flow," the state Department of Transportation said in a news release.

There are two other nearby bridges over the Rio Grande in Española and detours will be posted, the state agency said. The department said it began monitoring the Oñate Bridge in 2019, "following an underwater inspection that identified erosion at a pier."
