TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, marking a pivotal moment in World War II. On the 81st anniversary of D-Day, veterans in Tucson gathered to honor those sacrifices and to protest proposed cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

At the Tucson VA Medical Center, about 100 veterans, staff and supporters held a vigil and march, calling on the federal government to protect VA healthcare services. Organizers warn that planned federal cuts could eliminate 450 jobs at the Tucson VA branch, out of more than 80,000 proposed cuts nationally.

The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System offers critical care for PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, substance use, and many other services for more than 170,000 veterans in the region.
