HAMPTON, N.H. —

A man is being held in preventative detention after police said he fired several shots Thursday night at Hampton Beach on one of the busiest days of the year so far.

Connor Knowles, 21, is charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, falsifying evidence and criminal trespass.

According to court documents, police who were called to G Street at about 7:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired found a gun. Witnesses told them that a man fired five rounds from the gun before running away.

Officers said they later found Knowles hiding in the marsh. Police said he tried to run away and hide underneath a porch on Hobson Avenue, where he was arrested.
