DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The largest provider of affordable housing in Durham is asking city officials to bail them out of a big financial hole.

The Durham Housing Authority, which owes more than $2 million, is requesting a $1.5 million loan from the City Council.

According to officials, tenant rent comprises a significant portion of the organization's operating revenue and some residents haven't paid since the pandemic.

Durham Housing Authority residents pay an average monthly rent of $289, according to the city.

This week, city leaders questioned the housing authority, telling them to collect rent or figure out ways to help those who can't pay.
