Tech companies challenging Georgia's proposed social media law in federal court

PERRY, Ga. — Georgia's sweeping social media law requiring parental consent for minors is facing a constitutional challenge in federal court, with tech industry giants arguing the restrictions violate First Amendment rights just weeks before the July 1 implementation date.

NetChoice, a trade association representing Facebook, Google, YouTube, X and Amazon, filed a lawsuit May 1 in U.S. District Court in Atlanta seeking to block enforcement of House Bill 351. The case, NetChoice v. Carr, names Georgia Attorney General Christopher M. Carr as the defendant.

A federal judge heard arguments this week on NetChoice's request for a preliminary injunction to halt the law's enforcement while the constitutional challenge proceeds through the courts. No ruling has been issued yet.
