Capital Metro officially welcomed its first class of transit officers, marking a significant step in addressing safety concerns from both drivers and the community.

The newly formed squad consists of a captain, two sergeants, and nine officers, who were all sworn in during a ceremony Friday morning.

CapMetro President and CEO Dottie Watkins emphasized the importance of the new unit, highlighting that they didn't want to rush this process.

"The decision to build a transit police department wasn't made lightly. It was actually something we had been thinking about for decades," said Watkins.

Watkins explained that the creation of the unit was in response to community calls for increased safety measures, particularly following recent incidents on buses.
