BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Diocese of Buffalo in a news release Friday morning said that an auditor concluded the diocese was in “full compliance” with its written commitments to child protection .

The audit was mandated as part of a settlement with State Attorney General Letitia James that the two parties reached in 2022. The AG sued the diocese for failing to protect children after a two-year sexual abuse scandal resulted in the resignation of former Bishop Richard Malone.

But there have always been questions by sexual abuse survivors and other critics of the diocese about how independent this kind of audit truly is — and whether its scope is too limited to truly tell whether the diocese has changed its ways.
