ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — On Saturday, the people of Rogersville will elect a new mayor for the first time since 1977, and voters have already shown up to vote in record numbers.
According to Hawkins County Administrator of Elections Crystal Rogers, early voting nearly tripled from the previous mayoral election.
"This is the first contested race since 2013," Rogers said. "The current mayor is going out this time. So this is going to be a new mayor and we also have just six seats for the aldermen. And we've got nine people running. So it's a highly contested election."
The three candidates are Vice Mayor Brian Hartness, Tommy Wilmoth, and John Metz.
Metz says the most important thing to him is community feedback.
"After speaking to almost 680 households, is transparency," Metz said.
