COLUMBUS — The opening day of the state boys track and field championships at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium was headlined Friday by two athletes who handled the weight of their expectations with poise.
Central Catholic junior Victor Singleton entered as defending state champion in the Division II long jump, and he not only jumped further than a year ago but again landed on top of the awards podium.
Liberty Center junior Hunter Spangler entered as the top seed in the Division III shot put, but after placing just 12th a year ago, he came in with something to prove and did so by also leaving with the championship.
Singleton, a Texas A&M commit in football, jumped 23 feet, 3.75 inches on his second attempt and surpassed that on his fifth attempt by going a personal-best 23-6.5.
