HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Attorney General William Tong is adamant that insurers can and must do more to lessen spiking healthcare costs.
In a statement released Friday, Tong called on the state Insurance Department to scrutinize unaffordable rate hike demands.
The statement addressed insurance rate hike requests that were announced by the Insurance Department from seven health insurers for plans available on the individual and small group market, both on and off the state-sponsored exchange.
Tong said that the plans collectively cover around 224,000 Connecticut residents. The proposed average individual rate hike request is 17.8%, which is more than 9% higher than last year. The proposed average small group rate request is 13.1%, compared to 11.9% in 2024.
