MARTINSBURG — This past week, WVU Medicine put together free sports physicals and a Health Fest event for athletes and fine art students.
Families started by registering at the pavilion behind the Dorothy McCormack Center on the Berkeley Medical Center campus at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, where they could interact with different organizations, play games and win prizes. Then, when their name was called, they walked down to the WVU Health Sciences Center, where they got their physicals.
The free physicals started over 40 years ago in the Martinsburg High School gym, where volunteers could get a season pass for football games. Eventually, a doctor at the Berkeley Medical Center decided to take it over, providing free physicals to all the students in the county who need it.
