SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Downtown Sioux Falls shut down traffic on part of Phillips Avenue on Friday evening to make room for “Open Streets.”

The street transformed into a pedestrian-only zone with a different theme each time.

Friday’s theme was “Community in Motion,” featuring pickleball, outdoor workouts and wellness vendors.

Organizers said a small trial run last fall boosted business and now they will hold Open Streets events on the first Friday of each month through August.

“I think open streets connects our downtown community to the next spaces in downtown and it helps people find walkable areas and they feel more welcome and they see how many things to do in downtown Sioux Falls,” said DTSF Chief Community and Development Officer Taryn Sietsema.
