GREENVILLE, S.C. —
A new scam has hit the upstate, and a woman says she's out $1,200. Now, she wants people to know that if someone reaches out with a deal that's too good to be true, chances are it is.
"A friend of mine contacted me on Instagram, and I hadn't seen her on Instagram a long time," said Upstate resident Sue Benedetto.
That's how it all started; someone posing as her friend online, telling her the government was offering money through Community Development Block Grants.
"She said, 'Oh, you should call them to give money to seniors over 50 years old. You don't have to pay it back.' So she gave me the agent's name and everything. So I called them and left a message," Benedetto said.
In just a day, she'd be out more than $1,000.
