PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Orange High School Advanced Placement chemistry teacher Jonathan Rice turned up the heat on his students during their last week of classes as they received a hands-on lesson about flammable gases.

As part of the demonstration, methane gas was mixed into a combination of water and dish soap. After the students dipped their hands in the water and scooped up some bubbles, Rice, a 1998 OHS graduate, lit the mixture to give the impression that their hands were “on fire.”

Safety precautions were in place, and no students or staff were harmed in this experiment, according to a news release from the Orange City School District.
