CLOVIS, Calif. – A high school track and field sprinter in California was stripped of her state title for an “unsportsmanlike” celebration with a fire extinguisher after winning the race.

Clara Adams, a sophomore at North Salinas High School, won the 400-meter California Indoor Federation finals on May 31 with a time of 53.24, finishing .28 seconds ahead of the next-best runner. After her victory, Adams celebrated by using a small fire extinguisher to spray her cleats, a gesture signaling her cleats were on fire after her blazing victory.

However, CIF officials told Adams she was disqualified from her victory because her celebration was “unsportsmanlike,” she told the Los Angeles Times . She was also disqualified from the 200-meter finals, which took place later in the day.
