Ricky Rubio stepped away from the NBA in August 2023 and, since then, has largely stayed out of the public eye as he contemplated how to approach his career.

That changed this week, when the 34-year-old issued this social media post: “I took this year to reflect on my career and my life, and I’ve realized that if I’ve gotten to where I am today, it’s not because of the assists I’ve given, but because of the assists I’ve received,” he wrote.

“This isn’t a goodbye, it’s a thank you to all the people who have helped me along the way.”

Rubio, the fan favorite point guard who spent two seasons with the Utah Jazz, also made the move some athletes choose to after they end their careers: He took out a newspaper ad in every market in which he played, including one at The Salt Lake Tribune.
