When President Donald Trump and Tesla/SpaceX/X.com leader Elon Musk turned against one another, it happened very quickly.
On Friday, May 30, Trump held a White House media event to thank Musk for his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). And he told reporters that even though Musk's work with DOGE was over, he looked forward to working with him in the future.
But less than a week later, Trump and Musk were at each other's throats. After Musk described Trump's "big, beautiful bill" as a "disgusting abomination," Trump attacked him during a Thursday, June 5 press conference and told reporters, "I'm very disappointed with Elon…. Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore." Musk is now threatening to fund primary challenges against Senate Republicans who vote for Trump's megabill.
"Real Time" host Bill Maher, during his June 6 opening monologue, jokingly described the Trump/Musk feud as "Godzilla versus King Kong." But in right-wing media, many pundits are taking no pleasure in the conflict.
In an article published by Wired on June 6, journalist Jake Lahut observed, "Much of the right-wing media ecosystem appeared unsure how to react to the seeming public implosion of the relationship between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk on Thursday and into Friday morning. Outlets and influencers that typically react savagely to criticism of Trump played the spat more or less down the middle. Even much of the criticism of Musk was relatively genteel."
Fox News' Brian Kilmeade told his "Fox and Friends" colleagues he was hoping for a "big, beautiful truce."
During an appearance on Steve Bannon's "War Room" vodcast, former Fox News host Eric Bolling said of Musk, "He's gotta let Trump be Trump. You can be first bro, but you can't be de facto president."

Fox News' Greg Gutfeld commented, "I think the great thing about this is we all see it. Would you take a forceful president and a billionaire publicly feuding in public over an invalid president?.… But I want them to stop. I've had it. I don't want to see my parents fighting."
But Lahut notes a contrast between how right-wing media pundits are responding to the feud and how MAGA voters are responding,
"Amid all the back and forth," Lahut notes, "YouGov managed to get a quick online poll of nearly 4000 people into the field. While many in the conservative media ecosystem hedged their bets, Republican voters were more clearly sorted. They backed Trump over Musk nearly 12 to one."
