HAMPTON, Va. — If you’ve passed by Fort Monroe recently, you’ve likely noticed construction crews and scaffolding, and it’s just the beginning.

The Fort Monroe Authority has officially been given the green light to begin multiple long-awaited projects aimed at breathing new life into the historic site. That includes everything from converting former Army buildings into housing to creating new public memorials.

One of the first buildings to see transformation is 90 Ingalls Road, now approved for renovation. Crews are beginning work to turn the aging structure into apartments.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said John Hutcheson, Chief Financial Officer of the Fort Monroe Authority. “These are about 40 to 66 thousand square feet out of that 500 thousand square feet.”
