James Milton Robertson was a typical farm boy who lived on the family farm just outside of Morristown. Born in 1918, he was among the youngest of 7 surviving children of R.K. and Lennie McCoy Robertson and would have the life of a typical farm child of the era with farm chores and looking for opportunities to earn a little pocket money. Listed as a member of the Holston Chapel Methodist Church, and having lost his mother at age 10, James was counted as a top student at Marguerite School.
Following his 9th grade school year, and at a time when many considered that a sufficient education, James would leave school to work for 2 years on the family farm and the farm of W.L. Thompson.
