Smart meter units are set to be forced on over 500,000 households or they risk loss of hot water and heating. Those who do not switch over from the outdated RTS meters, which are being switched off on June 30, could lose the heating and/or hot water in their home.
Over 500,000 UK households are at risk. Retired policeman Paul Bryant, 77, from Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, refuses to accept the switch despite repeated warnings from his supplier.
Suppliers in the UK include OVO, EDF, EON, Octopus and British Gas. "Suppliers are bullies with phrases such as 'you could lose heating and hot water services' if you fail to switch to a smart meter," Bryant told This is Money. The former police officer has been "bombarded" with messages from British Gas insisting he has no alternative.
