LARGO — City Commissioner Michael Smith issued a public apology for a May 18 social media post that disparaged the Largo Police Department following what he described as a “horrible” incident fueled by alcohol, Ambien and an argument with his partner.
But based on remarks made by a police union representative, the longtime local lawmaker has a long way to go in his attempt to heal wounds his “poor decision” caused.
Johnathan Vasquez of the Suncoast Police Benevolent Association said he showed up to the May 20 commission meeting because he “wanted to talk about an incident that occurred on Sunday (May 18) that miscategorized our officers, my (union) members.”
Vazquez would not directly refer to the incident, which Smith said began at a gala he attended with his partner and ended with him
