It wasn’t a surprise to see Anthony Volpe’s name missing from the Yankees ’ lineup when it was posted in the team’s clubhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The shortstop took a hit-by-pitch to his left elbow in the bottom of the second inning on Friday when Red Sox starter Walker Buehler misfired an 88.8-mph changeup. The pitch came with the bases juiced and forced a runner in. It also left Volpe aching, as trainers had to check on him.
Volpe initially stayed in the game, but it didn’t take long for him to leave with a contusion. He went for X-rays and a CT scan, which came back clean.
“Painful and stiff,” Volpe, who homered earlier in the game, said after a 9-6 win when asked how his elbow was feeling. He added that there was some swelling.
